Marginality indices for biodiversity conservation in forest trees

چکیده
Marginal and peripheral populations are important for biodiversity conservation. Their original situation in a species’ geographic ecological space often confers them genetic diversity traits of high adaptive value. Yet theoretical hypotheses related to marginality difficult test because confounding factors that influence marginality, namely environment, geography, history. There is an urgent need develop metrics disentangle these factors. We designed nine quantitative indices peripherality define where margins lie within species distributions, from geographical, environmental historical perspective. Using the distribution maps eight European forest tree species, we assessed whether were idiosyncratic or they conveyed redundant information. database on marginal based expert knowledge, capacity predict status population. was no consistent pattern correlation between across confirming different information specific geometry distributions. Contrasting with this heterogeneity patterns relative importance species. However, there still significant country effect status, showing variation opinion vis-á-vis distribution. In order to investigate the effect of conservation on vegetation and biodiversity, two areas were studied. The main objectives of this study were to investigate the effect of conservation on biodiversity indicators. This study was conducted in two protected and unprotected areas with an area of 90 hectares. In order to harvest vegetation and biodiversity, systematic sampling method was used w...

Perhans, K. 2008. Cost-efficient conservation strategies for boreal forest biodiversity. Doctor’s dissertation. ISSN 1652-6880, ISBN 978-91-85913-72-5 Long and intensive forest management has made conservation measures in the forest landscape necessary to maintain forest biodiversity. The most common measure is to set aside land for conservation purposes. This, however, requires large financial...
متن کاملPopulation and conservation genomics of forest trees: seeing the forest for the trees
Background Forest trees exhibit striking adaptations to the environments in which they grow. A long history of quantitative genetic experimentation has established the genetic basis for many traits, which are likely adaptive since many of them are also correlated with environmental heterogeneity. The genes underlying these traits, however, have largely remained elusive. Recent applications of h...
متن کاملNatural Forest Management and Conservation of Biodiversity in Tropical Forests
As a reaction to the continued dwindling of tropical forest resources, many research and development organizations have turned to the idea of natural forest management in the hope of making tropical forest lands more profitable while maintaining biodiversity. Assertions of sustainability in logging practices have been inadequately supported, however. We begin with a review of the present knowle...
متن کاملAgricultural capacity and conservation in high biodiversity forest ecosystems.
Agricultural development is a leading cause of habitat destruction that increasingly threatens global biodiversity. To help understand the likelihood and implications of agricultural expansion in areas of high conservation importance, this article examines agricultural suitability in forested portions of biodiversity hotspots and tropical wilderness areas, regions with especially rich concentra...
